BOOK SUMMARY ๐Ÿ“–: The Coddling of the American Mind

In September of 2015, an article written by Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff was published in The Atlantic titled โ€œThe Coddling of the American Mind.โ€ ๐Ÿ“ฐ

At first glance, the title of this article could easily be mistaken for a right-wing polemic on โ€œthe snowflake generationโ€ and โ€œsocial justice warriorsโ€. ๐Ÿคฌ

But itโ€™s far from it! In fact, the authors themselves are openly left-leaning in their political views! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

It was the insistence of their publisher asking for a more provocative title than the one they proposed that โ€œCoddlingโ€ was born. (https://bit.ly/30URyJt) ๐Ÿ˜…

Initially, the article was written to discuss various instances happening on college campuses where students were protesting words, ideas, and subjects they deemed offensive. โœŠ

๐Ÿ“Œ Guest speakers who were coming to campus were being disrupted and shouted down.

๐Ÿ“Œ Ideas like โ€œmicroaggressionsโ€, โ€œtrigger warningsโ€, and โ€œsafe spacesโ€ were being introduced and implemented by college administrators.

๐Ÿ“Œ Words were starting to be equated by some college students as โ€œviolenceโ€.

๐Ÿ“Œ Colleges were catering to studentโ€™s demands with little critical discussion.

The point of Haidt and Lukianoffโ€™s article was to illuminate the problems and to try and understand why they were occurring. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Haidt and Lukianoff could understand the measures being taken by colleges, measures such as Microaggression Training, were being done with good intentions. ๐Ÿ‘

But coming from his work as a social psychologist, Haidt saw these measures as being

โš ๏ธ The idea of โ€œmicroaggressionsโ€ go against the very idea of not making the worst possible assumptions of other peoples’ intentions (a cognitive distortion known as โ€œmind readingโ€).

โš ๏ธ The idea of โ€œtrigger warningsโ€ and โ€œsafe spacesโ€ go against the very methods used in Exposure Therapy to combat phobias and feelings of anxiety.

โš ๏ธ The idea of continuously giving into angry studentโ€™s demands reinforces the likelihood they will use the same angry methods for demands in the future.

With the publication of the article, the reception was…controversial! ๐Ÿ˜…

Many readers, including college faculty and students, sent in responses confirming Haidt and Lukianoffโ€™s concerns. ๐Ÿ‘

Both faculty members and college students expressed fears of being unable to share their different viewpoints outside the status quo of their peers, less they not be reported to college administrators. ๐Ÿ”ฑ

Haidt and Lukianoff learned that some colleges had implemented a “Bias Reporting System”, where students could anonymously report anyone (including faculty) for sharing views they perceived to be discriminatory. ๐Ÿšจ

That said, there were also criticisms to Haidt and Lukianoff’s article as well. ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

The primary criticism was that the authors were using only a few isolated incidents to justify their national concerns. In other words, they were inciting a moral panic over a minor problem. ๐Ÿ˜…

Only a month after the articleโ€™s publication did another college incident happen. And then another. And then another. And then another. ๐Ÿšจ

One of the most infamous incidents happened 2 months later at Yale University. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Erika Christakis, a lecturer at Yale Child Study Care Center had written an email expressing concern over whether Yale administrators should be giving guidance to students about appropriate and inappropriate Halloween costumes. ๐Ÿ“ง

She believed administrators should let the students make their own decisions and let them talk among each other if they had disagreements. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

After all, they are adults over 18 years old. ๐Ÿ‘

โ€œ๐˜›๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฌ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฉ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณโ€, she noted in her email. โ€ ๐Ÿ˜Š

This email sparked outrage from some Yale students who interpreted Erikaโ€™s words as meaning she supported racist Halloween costumes. โ—

Soon after, around 150 student protesters surrounded the courtyard of Christakisโ€™s home on campus, writing statements in chalk which included: โ€œ๐™’๐™š ๐™ ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฌ ๐™ฌ๐™๐™š๐™ง๐™š ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช ๐™ก๐™ž๐™ซ๐™šโ€. ๐Ÿ˜

Erikaโ€™s husband Nicholas went out to the courtyard to try and reason with them. Students demanded he apologize and renounce his wifeโ€™s email. ๐Ÿคฌ

In a tense confrontation which lasted over 2 hours, Nicholas was accused of being โ€œracistโ€, โ€œoffensiveโ€, and โ€œcreating a space for violenceโ€. ๐Ÿคฌ

At a later point, one student even screamed in Nicholasโ€™s face:

Similar incidents echoed in the coming years. ๐Ÿ“…

Another infamous incident happened at Evergreen State College. Every year the school took part in an Day of Absence tradition where minority students and faculty would voluntarily stay off campus to highlight their campus contributions. ๐Ÿ™Œ

But in 2017 the tradition was flipped. Administrators decided they would now ask white students and white faculty to voluntarily stay off campus to be educated on race issues. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Biology professor Bret Weinstein (who openly identifies as a progressive and left-leaning libertarian) emailed the campus expressing concern over the change. ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Included in his email

As with Yale, this email sparked outrage. About a month after his email, students surrounded Weinsteinโ€™s classroom entrance and berated him. As with Christakis, students demanded Weinstein denounce his views and lose his job. ๐Ÿคฌ

Campus police were called, but students barred them from reaching Weinstein so they had to call for backup. ๐Ÿš“

The same student protesters eventually marched to the administration building, surrounded the College Presidentโ€™s office, and provided him the same beratement. ๐Ÿคฌ

There was even a point where student protesters barricaded the main entrances to the administration building and refused to let President Bridges leave his office unless they escorted him. โ—

For even more protest instances, I’ve provided Sources at the bottom of this post.

So perhaps, you may have the same question I was also asking ๐Ÿ˜…

What initially started out as a small article in The Atlantic was now having its initial concerns realized. ๐Ÿ™Œ

By September 2018, Haidt and Lukianoff had far more incidents and insights to report on, which ultimately was to become their full-length book: โ€œThe Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas are Setting up a Generation for Failureโ€. ๐Ÿ“–

But before I get to the book, itโ€™s important we back up for just a momentโ€ฆโœ‹

First off, what is the purpose of a university? What is the aim (or ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด) of a university? ๐Ÿค”

Most people I know would say it is to learn. To pursue truth. And yes, perhaps to also enjoy the frat parties! ๐Ÿ˜œ

But this idea is even shown on the crests of universities like Harvard (โ€œ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ดโ€/truth) and Yale (โ€œ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜น ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ดโ€/light and truth)! ๐Ÿ˜…

The point is: we go to a university to be enlightened, to be exposed to new ideas and viewpoints, to be among other students who may have different life experiences we can learn from. ๐Ÿ™Œ

But when it becomes a substitute for truth and knowledge, it sets a dangerous precedent on the very purpose of what attending a university is all about. ๐Ÿซ

In the book, Haidt and Lukianoff go into greater depth on what they see being taught on some college campuses.

The key word here I want to emphasize is โ€œ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฆ๐žโ€. The initial criticism directed at their article about overgeneralizing every college in fact turned out to be correct. ๐Ÿ˜…

So, for those who are concerned these incidents are reflective of every US college campus, you can be assured they are not! ๐Ÿ˜…

Now of course, the authors are NOT saying these Great Untruths are LITERALLY being taught, but that they are taught IMPLICITLY. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Another big problem they mention is whatโ€™s known as โ€œconcept creepโ€, where the definition of words have grossly expanded in meaning over time in academia. ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ“ The idea of what constitutes โ€œracismโ€ has expanded from individual acts to now include an all-encompassing society (e.g. systemic racism, racial essentialism).

๐Ÿ“ The idea of what constitutes โ€œtraumaโ€ has expanded from severe reactions to events like war to now normal aspects of life (e.g. divorce, bereavement, mean text messages).

๐Ÿ“ The idea of what constitutes โ€œsafetyโ€ has expanded from physical safety to now include โ€œemotional safetyโ€ (e.g protection from criticisms you disagree with).

In other words: if you see 2 people fighting over what is or isnโ€™t โ€œviolenceโ€, thereโ€™s a great possibility they may be using 2 separate definitions of the word! ๐Ÿ˜…

The dictionary definition of โ€œviolenceโ€ is NOT the same definition being used in some academic circles, where speech has also come to be equated with “violence”. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

As one UC Berkeley alum wrote in an Op-Ed โœ๏ธ:

โ€œAsking people to maintain peaceful dialogue with those who legitimately do not think their lives matter is a ๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐š๐œ๐ญ.โ€ ๐Ÿคฌ

๐Ÿ˜ฉ โ€œBUT DONALD! NONE OF WHAT YOU’RE SAYING TELLS ME WHY THIS IS HAPPENING!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

Great point! That’s what I’m going to talk about right now! ๐Ÿ˜Š

According to Haidt and Lukianoff, they propose the following reasons why they believe these things are happening.

– Because of the political climate, liberal colleges have shifted even further to the Left, thus tribalism is quick to ostracize differing viewpoints out of fear and group loyalty.

– This in turn has created distrust and hostility among those further to the Right, who now see colleges as lacking political diversity (in some places the ratio of Liberal to Conservative professors is 17 to 1), which in turn encourages their racial provocations towards the Left (e.g. “social justice warriors”, “snowflake generation”).

– The paradox is children are safer today in the US more than any other time in history, yet at the same time they are also the most overprotected.

– Overprotection causes children to mature at much older ages. The emotional maturity of an 18 year old today is more equivalent to a 16 year old of the previous generation.

๐Ÿ“Œ ๐ƒ๐ž๐œ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ž๐ž ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ฒ.

– Parents driven by unrealistic fears of strangers and kidnappings (which are extremely rare in comparison to the 70’s and 80’s when it was a problem).

– Overuse of smartphones and social media.

– A rising competitiveness for parents to get their kids into top universities.

– Students are treated like customers, so thereโ€™s a financial incentive for colleges to continue giving into student’s demands.

– Market pressures to compete with other universities for future students.

– Bureaucratic means of resolving studentโ€™s problems may encourage students to become overly dependent on schools to solve their problems.

– Thereโ€™s an ongoing desire for social justice activism.

– Social justice movements can be used to remove barriers to equality of opportunity. But when social justice efforts aim to include fighting for equality of outcome, it’s aiming for an goal which cannot be reached without also violating equal opportunity.

– Correlation does not equal causation. When there is a correlation of an identity group membership with an outcome gap, it does not automatically mean it is evidence of discrimination. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isnโ€™t.

If individuals cannot raise alternative possible causes without also being shouted down, collectively we will not arrive at the most accurate understanding of a problem.

While reading all this can be overwhelming and sound like an uphill battle, Haidt and Lukianoff do conclude the book with hope. There are countertrends currently happening! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

๐Ÿ‘ Recent studies are showing the ineffectiveness of trigger warnings. They also show that trigger warnings may even worsen a personโ€™s feelings of anxiety (https://bit.ly/2YxhzMk).

๐Ÿ‘ There are increasing discussions over the negative effects technology is having on kids, especially social media. Organizations like the Center for Humane Technology are aiming to reform the tech industry so products are healthier and less addictive.

๐Ÿ‘ More states are passing laws to allow โ€œfree-range parentingโ€ so a parent cannot be arrested for allowing their child to play without supervision.

๐Ÿ‘ More writers like Timur Kuran, Amy Chua, and Jonathan Rauch are calling for a rethinking on identity politics and how both the far-Left and far-Right are feeding off them.

Even the Dalai Lama tweeted his own statement:

๐Ÿ‘ More universities are starting to emphasize truth as their ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด and adopting the Chicago Statement on Principles of Free Expression (https://bit.ly/3e7Ohu0)

๐Ÿ‘ Author Jonathan Haidt himself has created Heterodox Academy, which includes thousands of professors, administrators, and students who are dedicated to promoting open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement in higher education.

Since the bookโ€™s publication, Haidt has continued to speak at various universities about these issues, and “Coddling” has won numerous awards for its ideas. Lukianoff is the President at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), addressing student rights violations on college campuses (freedom of speech, due process, religious liberty, etc). ๐Ÿ†

How We CREATE Our Suffering!

“What upsets people are not THINGS themselves but their JUDGMENTS about the things.”
~ Epictetus ๐Ÿ’ฌ
.
We are not upset because an event happens. We are upset because we believe an event “shouldn’t” have happened. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ
.
We’re arguing with the “shoulds” in our minds. ๐Ÿคฏ
.
We’re arguing with the feelings of anger and frustration we’re experiencing. ๐Ÿคฌ
.
We’re arguing with a past which no longer exists. โŒ›
.
But here’s the problem:
.
“When you argue with reality, you always lose.” ๐Ÿ˜“
.
So, I want to introduce you to another solution: ACCEPTANCE.
.
๐Ÿ™Œ Accept whatever it is you’re experiencing. ๐Ÿ™Œ
.
Accept the events which happened. Accept the emotions you’re feeling. Accept the judgments you’re making. Accept whatever is.
.
Accept. And allow yourself to let them go. ๐Ÿ™Œ
.
Release. ๐Ÿ™Œ
.
Surrender. ๐Ÿ™Œ
.
Because it’s only when we continue holding onto this baggage do we cause ourselves needless suffering. ๐Ÿ˜จ
.
“HOW DARE YOU, DONALD! I HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED!” ๐Ÿคฌ
.
I understand what you mean.
.
There’s this feeling of nobility, this sense of self-righteousness to hold onto these negative emotions. I get it. ๐Ÿ’ฏ
.
These emotions provide us feelings of power over things we feel powerless to. They provide us feelings of control over things which we feel are out of our control. โœŠ
.
As I heard 1 person describe their feelings of anger: “It’s like jet fuel!” ๐Ÿคฌ
.
For me to tell you to accept your emotions, for me to tell you to diffuse the mechanisms which provide your feelings of power and control, is the last thing you’d want to do right?! ๐Ÿ˜…
.
I understand.
.
But I can assure you: there are better, constructive ways to handle our problems. ๐Ÿ’ฏ
.
Let me clarify:
.
๐Ÿ“ Acceptance does not mean we say whether something is “right” or “wrong”.
.
๐Ÿ“ Acceptance does not mean we enable the things and situations we’re upset about.
.
๐Ÿ“ Accepting is about freeing ourselves from needless suffering.
.
๐Ÿ“ Acceptance is about clearing the weeds from our own minds.
.
๐Ÿ“ Acceptance is about helping us see things as they are, not how we think they “should” be.
.
And acceptance not only affects you! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ
.
It affects how you will interact with others, how civil you will be in your communication. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ
.
It affects what solutions you will come up with to address your problems. ๐Ÿค”
.
It affects the long-term impact you’ll have on the situation rather than just the short-term. ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ
.
“Accept – then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it.”
~ Eckhart Tolle ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Why You Shouldn’t Argue With REALITY!

Remember: People don’t know…what they don’t know.
.
You cannot expect a child who’s never learned math to understand algebra. ๐Ÿ”ข
.
You cannot expect a teenager who’s never learned personal responsibility to just do it. ๐Ÿ‘ค
.
You cannot expect an adult who’s never surrounded themselves with opposing viewpoints to have a nuanced view of the world. ๐ŸŒŽ
.
You think they “should know better”. But the fact is: they don’t. So why be upset over things 100% outside your control? ๐Ÿ˜“
.
My point is you don’t have to hold onto these expectations in your mind about how others “should” be acting. It’s causing you needless suffering. ๐Ÿ˜ซ
.
Accept things as they are, not how you feel they “should” be. See things as they are, not how you “wish” they would be. ๐Ÿ‘€
.
Allow yourself to let the “shoulds” go. ๐Ÿง˜

And instead, be kind.

Why We’re Missing What MATTERS! (Mental Health Awareness Month)

.
For my well-being as a whole, Iโ€™d say Iโ€™m a pretty optimistic person with dashes of realism. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
.
But for the Intellectual in me who looks out at society as a collective, I’m definitely more of a pessimistic optimist.
.
To clarify my oxymoron: I prepare for the worst, but I hope for the best. ๐Ÿ˜…
.
As weโ€™ve entered a new decade, I am pleasantly surprised to look back on our society and see how far weโ€™ve come.
.
๐Ÿ’ง We have water we didn’t have to filter! ๐Ÿ’ง
.
๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ We drive on streets we didn’t have to pave! ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ
.
๐Ÿ“š We read books we didn’t have to write! ๐Ÿ“š
.
๐ŸŽถ We listen to music we didn’t have to produce! ๐ŸŽถ
.
๐Ÿ’Š We use medicines we didnโ€™t have to create! ๐Ÿ’Š
.
๐Ÿ™ We have so many things we can be grateful for! ๐Ÿ™
.
๐Ÿคฌ “DONALD, DON’T BE SO NAIVE! WHAT ABOUT…?!” ๐Ÿคฌ
.
Of course, the history of our humanity hasnโ€™t been all sunshine and rainbows either, no doubt! ๐ŸŒˆ Big shifts in our world have also included plagues, wars, and violent revolutions, things many of us have never had to experience firsthand. ๐Ÿ‘
.
I’m not a History major, but I agree with you; thereโ€™s no point in me denying the dark sides of history either! ๐Ÿ’ฏ
.
.
But in spite of all that, in spite of all the negatives I could tell you about, we as humans have nevertheless continued to move forward. We have not yet allowed ignorance to destroy ourselves and our fellow neighbors to complete oblivion! ๐Ÿ˜Š
.
Looking at our current society, from agriculture to medicine to artificial intelligence, we’re continuing to make great strides forward in science and technology! ๐Ÿค–
.
To give you one stunning fact: the average life expectancy in the past century has gone from age 30 to 70! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
.
๐Ÿคฌ “DONALD!!! HELLO?! COVID-19!!!” ๐Ÿคฌ
.
Of course, all of us at the moment are collectively going through a crisis now with the COVID-19 pandemic. There’s a ton of things I can tell you I feel very concerned about during this time. ๐Ÿ’ฏ
.
But I encourage everyone not to dismiss the bigger picture, not to dismiss all the progress we’ve made as a human race as a means of holding onto one’s pessimism during stressful times.
.
I could tell you about my concerns for my loved ones who are very susceptible to this virus. I could also tell you about my concerns for the mental health impact our social distancing will have on people. ๐Ÿ˜จ
.
While I know the measures we’re currently taking are a necessity, I also won’t be so naive as to believe it doesn’t carry with it a new set of problems we’ll need to address. ๐Ÿ‘
.
…and that’s why I share this post with you today! ๐Ÿ™Œ
.
In honor of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, my hope in sharing this post is we continue expanding our understanding of mental health and focusing on long-term solutions to rectify it.
.
.
While so many like myself can acknowledge the progress above and are grateful to be living in this day and age, I’ve also noticed many people, even way before COVID-19, are more pessimistic and cynical than ever.
.
Weโ€™ve come so far as a civilization. But for many, it somehow does not “feel” like it has. ๐Ÿ˜จ
.
Why is that?! If we live in such affluent times with more resources than ever for us to be happy, why are so many still unhappy?!
.
Despite many of us having way more than our basic needs for food, water, and shelter met, why do we still see depression and suicide rates continue to rise?! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
.
Yes! ๐Ÿ“ˆ
.
๐ŸŒบ How, if thereโ€™s so many flowers in our gardens, more than we can count, do we still feel like we’re missing something? ๐ŸŒบ
.
Are we just so ungrateful that we canโ€™t see whatโ€™s right in front of us? ๐Ÿค”
.
Are we just not reminding each other enough about history and how great we actually have it today? ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ
.
Are people just more open these days about their emotions, hence the increase in depression diagnoses? ๐Ÿ“„
.
I think these answers might be part of it, but I also don’t think the answers are so simple either. I think it’s multifaceted. If you want me to give you a simple answer to these questions, I’m sorry to say you’ve come to the wrong post! ๐Ÿ˜…
.
But while I don’t have all the answers, I will propose at least one big cause I believe we as a society are greatly neglecting. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ
.
And thatโ€™s what I wanted to talk to you about in this post! ๐Ÿ˜„
.
To start, Iโ€™m reminded of the words of Palmer Joss in the 1997 film “Contact”: ๐ŸŽฌ

The problems I see happening:

Weโ€™re mastering Quantity at the expense of Quality. โš–๏ธ

Weโ€™re mastering our Outer World at the expense of our Inner World. โš–๏ธ
.
Weโ€™re mastering Intelligence at the expense of Emotional Intelligence. โš–๏ธ

Weโ€™re mastering Extrinsic Values at the expense of Intrinsic Values. โš–๏ธ

Weโ€™re mastering the Objective at the expense of the Subjective. โš–๏ธ

Weโ€™re mastering the Yang at the expense of the Yin. โš–๏ธ

Weโ€™re addressing more of what we Want at the expense of what we Need. โš–๏ธ

Weโ€™re feeding our Heads at the expense of our Hearts. โš–๏ธ

To use the Hopi word: Koyaanisqatsi, or โ€œlife out of balanceโ€.

I see no better time than this day and age for more and more people to be experiencing an existential crisis, which is a serious contemplation on whether oneโ€™s life has any true purpose or meaning. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
.
I can tell you from many firsthand experiences, having an existential crisis is VERY unpleasant! And sadly, I know some individuals who didn’t manage to make it out of this existential abyss. ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ
.
In a world filled with many paradoxes and contradictions, in a world weโ€™re told has absolute truths yet conflicting ideas keep filling us with doubt, in a world that at times can seem pretty absurd overall, what is a person supposed to believe anymore?! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
.
Think about it: If everything you were once told to believe and embrace about life became ideologically challenged and the ideals you once held onto were now reduced to a pile of meaninglessness, what is the next step for someone like you to take? ๐Ÿ™‰
.
I can’t blame someone who has had these life experiences and now has become so cynical about life. As George Carlin said, “Scratch any cynic and you will find a disappointed idealist.” ๐ŸŽญ
.
But let me assure you: there’s plenty of better options than just embracing cynicism. There’s plenty of better options than just embracing nihilism.

We all need to feel like we belong in this world, the need to feel like our lives have purpose and meaning, the need to feel like we are seen and appreciated by others, the need to feel we have a compelling future to look forward to. You could call these “the needs of the soulโ€.
.
And yet, how many people right now are actually getting those needs met? How many are instead just being told to โ€œbe happyโ€ or being told to just remember “how great our country isโ€? ๐Ÿ’”

Perhaps the conditions weโ€™ve commonly known as Depression and Anxiety are not as simple as chemical imbalances in oneโ€™s brain as we once thought. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
.
Perhaps our emotions have been messengers trying to tell us something important. ๐Ÿ“ฌ
.
Perhaps our emotions have been signaling to us the way we’re living is making us ill. ๐Ÿ˜ซ
.
Perhaps we’re living in a sick society that magnifies, reinforces, and exacerbates these psychological problems. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
.
Let me clarify, I’m NOT claiming any conspiracies here! I’m not saying ANY of this is being done intentionally, but rather it’s the long-term results of a society neglecting these signals for so long. โŒ›
.
Weโ€™ve been so focused on external factors to โ€œfixโ€ these signals, whether it was through drugs, alcohol, food, or needless distractions that we’re in the collective habit of inadvertently killing the messenger! ๐Ÿ’Š

.
Compared to where we were a few decades ago, weโ€™re now living in a much more complex world. In other words, weโ€™re no longer going to be able to solve these complex problems with the same simplistic thinking which created them. ๐Ÿ‘
.
So what Iโ€™m advocating to you all is developing our Emotional Intelligence, developing our Cognitive skills, and encouraging to everyone the psychological development of the individual. ๐Ÿ’ฏ
.
We’ve assumed for too long these skills would simply develop without much effort on our parts. But again, look at where many people are now. ๐Ÿ˜”
.
Itโ€™s important I emphasize: โ›” Iโ€™m NOT saying to start neglecting or throwing out what science and technology has to offer! Not at all!
.
Iโ€™m not saying we need to choose one OR the other; ๐—œโ€™๐—บ ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜„๐—ฒ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ก๐—— ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ.
.
As science and technology only moves forward with greater complexity, I want to ensure we as individuals are also moving forward too, psychologically and with a more complex understanding of “knowing thyself”. ๐Ÿ˜Š
.
But what will this require?
.
๐ŸŒŸ We need to appoint and elect leaders of integrity, of emotional intelligence, who build trust in leading through their example; that’s how we decrease cynicism.
.
๐ŸŒŸ We need to create meaning where there’s meaninglessness to be found in peopleโ€™s lives; that’s how we decrease nihilism.
.
๐ŸŒŸ We need to teach people how to think and not what to think; thatโ€™s how we develop cognitive and critical thinking skills.
.
๐ŸŒŸ We need to develop self awareness, to challenge our black-and-white thinking habits, and learn how to communicate civilly with others we disagree with; that’s how we develop empathy.
.
๐ŸŒŸ We need to learn to compromise, to promote societal order, to re-establish moral standards and mutually agreed upon truths; thatโ€™s how we decrease what sociologist Emile Durkheim referred to as “anomie” or “normlessness”.
.
And I won’t be so naive as to think implementing these ideas will be easy, that they will be some quick fixes, that people will be so easily convinced they are necessary endeavors. โœ…
.
I know that me just saying this to all of you doesnโ€™t mean you’re going to take any action to do them. But at the very least, I hope I planted some seeds in your mind to think more about. โœ…
.
These initiatives will require many more people to step forward and be a part of the change. This is not meant to come off like a political statement; it’s just something Iโ€™ve been very passionate about sharing with you all for a while. I’m glad I have the words finally written out to you now! ๐Ÿ˜
