Why the Sky is a REMINDER!

A couple days ago I was out on my morning run. As usual I woke up early, got my clothes on, put my earbuds in, and was off! 💨

But on this particular day I caught a glimpse of the morning sky, and I fell into a trance. Of course I had caught glimpses of the sky many times before, but today stood out. 👀

A thought crossed my mind: “When was the last time I actually looked up at the sky, I mean REALLY looked at the sky?” 🤔

Have you ever taken a moment to just pause…and simply appreciate what is all around us? 😊

🗣️ “It’s just a sky, Donald! It’s everywhere! It’s nothing special!” 🗣️

It’s not just about the sky.

🌎 It’s a reminder of the planet we all live on, the only planet human beings inhabit.

☁️ It’s a reminder of the clouds, how they are ever-changing each and every day.

☀️ It’s a reminder of the sun, that without its light our whole civilization would perish.

🌌 It’s a reminder of our universe, that we live on but a mere speck of what is estimated to have billions of other galaxies besides our own.

There are so many things we take for granted each day which grant us the very gift of life. 🎁

And THAT is what the sky reminded me of that day! 😊

So whenever you feel you have a big problem in your life, or you simply want to be reminded of a greater perspective, I encourage you: look up. Because it’s always available to us! ❤️

Why You DON’T Remember Your Past!

😱 YOU DON’T REMEMBER YOUR PAST (REALLY)! 😱

Did you know I make these social media posts not just for you all but also for myself? Yeah I know! I’m so selfish right?! 😂

For me, these posts I create are not only to share with you but they’re also friendly reminders to myself. My Future Self. It’s so he never forgets the memories I’m choosing to retain for him. ❤️

Now perhaps what I just said sounds a bit odd; what do I mean: “retain”?! Let me ask you this: do you remember every single waking moment of your whole entire life? I highly doubt it. 😉

What if I told you with every memory you have, you also have the choice to choose which parts you’ll take with you into your future. 😱

No this isn’t some voodoo! I’m talking about:

📌 The parts of your past you choose to continue focusing on

📌 The parts of your past which mattered to you the most

📌 The parts of your past you defined as shaping you into the person you are today

Think of a family photo where everyone looks so cheerful and is enjoying themselves. But in actuality, the real moment wasn’t as cheerful as the photo made it out to be. The family was simply posing for a photo, putting on forced smiles for the camera. 📸

And say a few years later a family member comes across the photo. They barely remember the actual moment, but their only reference is now this photo. This cheerful photo. Thus, that family member starts to believe the past moment was in fact a pleasant one. But remember: it actually wasn’t. 😲

🌟 We don’t remember our pasts as a matter of fact. We remember the stories we created about our pasts. 🌟

So when I say “retain”, it’s a matter of questions to ask of oneself: What do I want to remember for my future? What stories will I choose to continue remembering about my past? What stories am I willing to let go of? 🤔

Even more importantly: How will I choose to ultimately define my past? Are the moments I once felt negative about now the thorns I carry? 😡 Or will I now decide to see each thorn as a blessing in disguise instead? 🌻

🌟 It’s less about what actually happened in our pasts and more about how we’re choosing to interpret them for our future. 🌟

This photo was taken as I sat atop Dunure Castle. I share this photo because it’s how I want to remember this moment in time. ⏰ This photo is what I want to represent that moment for my Future Self to see later. And whatever else I write here about this moment is what I’m consciously choosing for my Future Self to keep on remembering. 😊

While we certainly remember key moments from our posts, we often forget the smaller details and retain what we wish to remember. That being said, I want to make sure my Future Self also remember this about this moment:

📍 How in awe I was sitting atop there, how grand it all felt to me.

📍 How my friend Kris Nimbley took the photo and was using the Rule of Thirds I told him about.

📍 How it was a chilly and windy day, but the scenery dissolved the complaints I had in my mind.

📍 How it was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited, how I wanted to stay there for hours.

Choose what you will remember and how you will define it. Because however you define it now is what’s going to shape the rest of your life. ❤️ #EudaimonicLife

Why We Shouldn’t DISMISS Spirituality! (PERSONAL)

What is Spirituality?

Hippies? Meditation? Yoga? New Age? “Namaste”? Supernatural? Religion?
•
What if I said spirituality is reflected in many more aspects of our lives than we think? 😮

✔️ In the Olympic athlete who surpasses the physical capabilities expected for the average human being.
✔️ In the wealthy person who was given “everything” from birth, yet still feels empty inside.
✔️ In the individual who had the worst of circumstances but found the will to triumph despite the odds.
✔️ In the sheltered adult who finds much excitement in attending events like Burning Man and Tomorrowland.
✔️ In the way 2 people can express love towards each other without a single word spoken.
•
Spirituality is not a religion. It’s not dogmatic, although it can certainly be treated as such. If I could try to simplify it as best as I could, I would say spirituality is an exploration into the subjective experience of life, understanding what it means to be a human being. In other words, it’s involves all of our lives, our entire world. 🌎
•
Science has the objective side covered with logic, rationale, and critical thinking (all still very important, by the way); spirituality is on the subjective side with the theoretical, the phenomena, the profound, and the soulful. Both in their own ways are in search of truth: understanding how the world works and why we’re here. 🕵️‍♀️
•
For those who knew me a few years ago I use to embrace a belief system of agnostic atheism. And for those who only just met me…plot twist haha! But I don’t embrace it anymore. I’d say if anything I embrace a form of secular (humanistic) spirituality these days, not focused on anything divine or supernatural but on the other human beings all around me. I’m focused on us, making the world a better place. 🙌
•
I found that science didn’t have all the answers, so my journey brought me into spirituality. I had more realizations, more understandings, more experiences I cannot place into words, and voids I couldn’t fill with science. I found there’s a difference between intelligence and wisdom. 👍
•
Let me clarify I’m NOT dismissing science at all either. Our civilization would not be where it is today without all the advances in technology, agriculture, and understanding on a molecular level without it. Some unfortunately in the spiritual community dismiss science or haven’t taken the time to understand how complex it all is and can fall into the pseudoscientific or conspiracy theory territory. I’m also NOT making an equivalence between the two. But what I do now is embrace both science AND spirituality as two forms in the search for truth, quantity and quality respectively. ☯️
•
I do notice sometimes though with the emotional fulfillment spirituality brings that one can easily throw out the baby with the bathwater. I caution with that, yet continue to welcome others who want to experience this other aspect of life. For me, a void has been filled. Science was not the endpoint. But neither was spirituality. And neither is my continued creation of meaning. 😁

Spirituality has been given a bad rap, and it’s far more than someone just being a hippie. I encourage you to take a dip. 😃 #TranscendLabels

How I AWAKEN My Inner Warrior! (PERSONAL)

💪 There’s a Warrior inside all of us! 💪

Have you ever experienced a moment where you stunned yourself, where you were just like: “HOW DID I DO THAT?!” I’m talking about moments where You surprised yourself and saw how you’re more capable of doing something than you initially believed?! 😲

I’ve experienced those moments many times in exercise! 🔢

I consider myself more of a Lover than a Fighter. But there are moments where the inner Warrior just comes out of me, seeping into every ounce of my being as I push myself past the mental limits I initially set. 👊

It happened one day on my morning run. As I started to run, I turned on my earphones to a song by Hans Zimmer called “Journey to the Line”. It’s a song that starts off very slowly, giving a quiet and brooding mood. But over the minutes, the song continues to build. I turn my pace from a short jog to a power walk. As the volume of the song picks up, so does my pace. As the music reverberates through my ears, so it does through my entire body. My eyes start to squint, the wind pushes against my face, the sweat starts to form. And then there is a moment, a moment in the song, all but for a split second, and I let myself go…🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

The song enters its climax. I’m no longer sprinting; I am running for my life! In my imagination: I am running for the Gold. Running right into the heart of battle. Running as the explosions and chaos reign behind me. Running as if it is Life or Death. Running as if all of humanity’s lives depend on it. It is all up to me…! 🙌

Suddenly, the music calms. Reality comes back into focus. I am back in my body. I am back to slowing down my sprint. I am aware of my panting breathing. I am back in the quiet suburbs of Chicago. 🏙️

The immortality I felt in the moment becomes but a thought again. 🌟

There’s a Warrior in me. I don’t often show it, but it’s there. And it’s in you too! To think I use to be 80 pounds more than I was 3 years ago…it required the Warrior in me. Will You also open yourself to your inner Warrior?! ❤️ #TranscendLabels
